Libraries Hit by Random Closings
From the Philadelphia Daily News (12/14/2009): Last Monday, there was one. On Tuesday, there were five. And Thursday, there were six "unscheduled closings" of libraries in Philadelphia. On any given day this year, one or more branches of the 54-branch Free Library of Philadelphia have been closed unexpectedly due to staff shortages. Read more . . .
PA Budget
The recently passed Pennsylvannia budget included a $15 million cut to the public library subsidy. This 20.1% cut will be shared throughout the state and is coupled with other library related cuts including at 47.5% cut to the Office of Commonwealth Libraries, a 1.7% cut in Library Services for the Visually Impaired & Disabled, and a 57.1% cut to Library Access. Alliance Letter
The Free Library has announced the schedule for branches beginning on October 5. The passing of House Bill 1878 has kept the libraries open, but there are still obstacles to overcome. Holmesburg Grants Friends of Holmesburg Library secured a $2,000 Philadelphia Activities Fund grant thanks to the support of their Councilwoman, Joan Krajewski. Friends Groups
Branch Library Friends Groups (Friends Groups) are composed of neighborhood volunteers who work to promote and strengthen their local library by increasing awareness and ownership of this important educational and cultural asset to area residents.
What Friends Do:
Community strengthening: serving as a conduit for the variety of ethnic groups to enrich each another.
Advocacy: increase the visibility of the branch as a vital part of the community.
Volunteer Opportunity: augment library staff/receive valuable work experience.
Collection Development: Friends raise funds for books, CDs, videos, periodicals and computer programs that serve neighborhood needs.
More Card Holders Increase Circulation: educating neighbors about the importance of being a library card-holder resulting in increased circulation.
Programs: reading and computer literacy, book clubs, career strategies, English as a second language, gardening, health, arts and cultural and more.
