FFL

  • The Friends will hold a reception to welcome Siobhan Reardon, newly appointed President and Director of the Free Library of Philadelphia on Saturday, September 20, 2008 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. This event will be held at Book Corner. All are welcome to attend.
  • Our Third Annual Gala and Silent Auction will be held on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The event will take place at Philadelphia's Independence Seaport Museum, located at Penn's Landing on Columbus Boulevard between Dock and Walnut Streets. The evening will include tours of the Seaport Museum, hor d'oeurve & open bar by Frog Commissary, live music, and the silent auction featuring many great items donated to support our cause.
  • The next and last Volunteers are Vital Workshop will take place on Saturday, March 1, 2008 and will focus on Financial Management.

There will be a Friends Welcome and Community Meeting at 12:30 p.m. followed by a Free Family Program featuring Face Painting and Make & Take Crafts from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Free refreshments will be available.

  • Come to the Chestnut Hill Library on Wednesday, April 9, at 8:00 p.m. to hear Ben Yagoda talk about his latest book, When You Catch an Adjective, Kill It: The Parts of Speech, for Better and/or Worse. According to Christopher Buckley, it's "absolutely required - and utterly fun - reading for anyone who cares about the work-in-progress that is the English language." The author of four books, Ben Yagoda has contributed to Slate.com, The New York Times Book Review, The American Scholar, Rolling Stone and Esquire.

Coleman/NW Regional

  • The Friends of Joseph E. Coleman Library will sponsor an American Red Cross Blood Drive at the library on Saturday, August 9, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The American Red Cross will enter donors in a drawing to win a $50 gas card. The Friends of JEC Library will also enter donors in a raffle to win dinner for two at the Old Country Buffet or a $20 supermarket gift certificate. One blood donation saves three lives. The library is located at 68 W. Chelten Avenue.
  • Book Club: Saturday, April 26 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The book to be discussed is Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt. The Friends will also host a Spring Fling Flea Market on April 26 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Household and sundry other items will be available for purchase.
  • Richard Wright Week presentation, Thursday, April 24 at 3:15 p.m.
  • Saturday, March 29 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. the Friends of the Coleman Library hold a Book and Bake Sale at the library. The Pennsylvania SPCA will also be at Coleman with the SPCA Mobile Adoption Unit. Pet Story Times for kids from noon to 2:00 p.m.

Donatucci

  • Donatucci Friends sponsor a Spring Flea Market & Family Fun Day on Saturday, May 17 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Donatucci Library. Over 50 spaces are available at just $15 for you to clear out your closets or find some hidden treasures to fill them up with. Events will include Bubbles the Clown with face painting from 10 a.m. to noon and a display and talk on model ships from 1 to 3 p.m. Book and bake sales will last through the day with refreshments and snacks available for purchase.

  • The Friends sponsor a Basic Embroidery Techniques Workshop on Saturday, June 14 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Marie Elcin, a Fiber Artist and Graduate of the Moore College of Art, will present a program for teens and adults on the basic techniques needed to develop your embroidery skills. Embroidery materials and tools will be provided. Attendees may bring an article of clothing (of non-stretchy and non-padded material) that they would like to decorate.

Entertainment will include a magic show with Kyle and Kelly, Bubbles the Clown will be there doing face painting and balloon sculptures, and Andrew Roblin will be doing a family musical program.   • The U.S. Air Force's Heritage Aire Celtic Ensemble comes to Holmesburg Library on Monday, June 16 to present a free concert for all to attend. Under the direction of TSgt Sherry Burt, the ensemble blends traditional music of Ireland, Scotland, and England with a contemporary musical style to create a stunning musical tapestry. Members perform on traditional instruments such as Irish flute, tin whistles and bodhran, as well as modern instruments like acoustic guitar and button accordion. Refreshments will be served at 5:30 p.m. with the concert to begin directly at 6 p.m. in the garden of the Holmesburg Library.
  • Friends of Holmesburg Library host Do it Yourself Family Gardening Day on Saturday, June 7 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Bring your favorite flower or plant for the library's new Children's Reading Garden.   • Tucker Tales Puppet Show and Earth Day Celebration on April 21 at 6:30 p.m. This is a free family program for children and their parents and grandparents. All are welcome.

Kensington

  • Friends Meeting: Wednesday, September 17 at 4:00 p.m. Help us spread the word and grow involvement in the group as we work together to promote the use and visibility of our library, develop community programs and resources, raise funds, and cultivate partners. Your input in shaping this community group is appreciated.
  • Friends of Kensington will host four Make a Mural workshops to create ideas for the mural going up at the library. Muralists Pedro Ospina and Betsy Casanas will lead children, teens, & adults in creating an art project unique to the Kensington Library. Participants will brainstorm, sketch, and create organic shapes that will be incorporated into the final mural design. Workshops take place from 2 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30; Friday, August 1; Wednesday, August 6; and Friday, August 8. These workshops are free. Children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult for the first workshop, which will include a walking tour of Kensington's community gardens. Artwork will be displayed in the library. Sponsored by Friends of Kensington Library, the Free Library of Philadelphia, and Philadelphia's Mural Arts Program.
  • The Eagles Book Mobile tackles reading to give children a better field position in their lives on Tuesday, August 5 at 1:00 p.m. Visit the library to hear Storybook Man and get a free, new book (kids 5 to 11 years old).
  • Science in the Summer - Tuesday, July 15 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Pre-Registration begins May 15. Put on your safety goggles and explore the exciting world of chemistry! Turn pennies into gold, make crystals, and watch raisins and popcorn dance.
  • Join in role playing theater that will open your eyes and exercise your mediating muscles with the Conflict Resolution Workshop on Friday, July 11 at 2:00 p.m.

No encyclopedia sets please! Be sure to mark the calendar for this not-to-be missed event.

  • Join us for Friday Afternoon Crafts for kids ages 6 to 12 on Fridays, August 1, 8, and 15 at 2:00 p.m. Beat the heat and be creative with a craft program sponsored by the Friends of Lawncrest library.
  • The Friends of Lawncrest are sponsoring Mr. Malcolm and His Storytime Friends on Monday, July 28 at 6:30 p.m. Come to the library for some great entertainment; refreshments will be provided.
  • A Job/Career and Resume Workshop for Teens, sponsored by the Friends of Lawncrest, will be held on Wednesday, June 18 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. for teens that are contemplating getting a summer job or a year long part time job. You will find lots of help at this informative workshop.
  • Friends Meeting: June 4 at 1:15 p.m. The June program is Accordion Music with Andrew Mingel.
  • Wednesday, May 7: Friends 8 Annual Box Lunch Bingo Fund Raising Event! $10 ticket includes a box lunch prepared by Frank's Deli, 3 standard bingo cards and a table prize chance. In addition to the food and games, we will have trombola, theme baskets and a Lucky Buck and bingo specials so come and have a good time for a great cause!

  • Friends of Oak Lane are holding fund raising event on Friday, September 19, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. It will be a Broadway Show tune concert with singers from the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Chester County. It starts at 7:30 pm at the Korean United Church, 12th and Cheltenham, Philadelphia 19126. Admission is only $15 for adults, $6 for teens. Refreshments and reception to follow. This group performed the Pirates of Penzance at the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival in Buxton, England, UK in August, 2008.

  • The Wynnefield Library is now accepting registrations for a book discussion program entitled American Life Stories exploring diverse American memoirs. Ms. Valerie Harris, an outstanding writer/playwright, editor and publisher will lead a small group of adults in four discussions at the Wynnefield Library on March 26, April 23, May 28, and June 25 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Participants will read and discuss popular titles including James McBride's The Color of Water: A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother. The program is free and open to the general public and requires no special knowledge about literature. Participants will receive their own copies of the books. Quality programs such as American Life Stories make Pennsylvania libraries the place where learning begins. American Life Stories is part of Read About It!, a book discussion series of the Pennsylvania Humanities Council. This program is supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities and its We the People initiative on American History.
