  • The next Volunteers are Vital workshop will take place on Saturday, December 1, 2007 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Nuts and Bolts: Tools for Success - Unlock the keys to mission statements, productive meetings, effective committees, officer elections and job descriptions, and bylaws.   • FFL will be taking part in the WHYY 50th Anniversary Celebration on September 29, 2007 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the WHYY Technology Center on Independence Mall. All WHYY Members receive 10% of their total purchase at Book Corner every day.
  • Book Corner will be working as a partner in this year's greenFest Philly on September 9, 2007. We'll be out selling books and raising awareness for both the Free Library and the Environment. The action takes place from 11:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. on South Street, between 7th & 11th Streets.
  • Alliance Brunch: Friends of the Free Library of Philadelphia invites you to bring a new face to our Alliance of Friends. Bring a friend and join us for great food and company as we share ideas and stories of past triumphs and defeats. Saturday, June 23, 2007 in the Skyline Room, 4th Floor of the Central Library, 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Blanche A. Nixon/Cobbs Creek

  • Blanche A. Nixon's next Friends Meeting will be held on September 18, 2007 at 2:00 p.m.
  • The Friends of Blanche Nixon are sponsoring the Spell-to-Excel spelling bee on May 26, 2007 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The event will take place at the Blanche Nixon Library. Special thanks go out to Ms. Atanee Jones and all the friends for their efforts on this great project.

  • Friends of Joseph E. Coleman Library Book Club: The September book selection is Their Eyes Were Watching God, a novel written by Zora Neale Hurston, one of the most controversial and respected writers of the Harlem Renaissance. Donatucci

  • Friends Meeting: December 12 at 7:00 p.m.
  • Friends Meeting: November 14 at 7:00 p.m.
  • Friends of Donatucci Library host an Open House on Thursday, November 8th from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. There will be activities for children and adults, including a presentation of the Friends' plans for a garden at the branch.
  • Friends Meeting on October 17, 2007 at 7:00 p.m.
  • There is a meeting of the Donatucci Friends group on Wednesday, September 26 at 7 pm.
  • Friends of the Donatucci Branch are sponsoring Yoga for Adults and Teens at the library on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. and Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. starting June 18, 2007 and continuing through the summer.
  • Book and Bake Sale on Saturday, May 5, 2007. Children's programs will also be featured.

Eastwick

  • Summer Sizzler: Flea Market and Book Sale on June 16, 2007.

Falls of Schuylkill

  • The Friends will sponsor a Greens Sale on December 7 from noon to 8 p.m. and December 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Falls of Schuylkill Library. They will be selling Douglas and Fraser Firs, Wreaths, White Pine Roping and Poinsettias. Call Rita Hughes for additional information: 215.842.3794. Complimentary refreshments will be available.
  • Crafts Fair: December 1 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

  • Monday, October 29 at 7:00 p.m.: Falls Library Book Group discusses the memoir Paula by Isabel Allende. Discussion will be led by Jessica Baff.
  • Wednesday, October 17 at 6:30 p.m.: Preventing Identity Theft - a free workshop provided by the office of State Representative Jewell Williams

Fox Chase

  • The Friends of the Fox Chase Library will be hosting a Holiday Craft and Gift Show on Saturday, December 8, 2007 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the library, 501 Rhawn Street, Philadelphia. Contact Michele Laganella for more info: 215.498.5908
  • Friends of Fox Chase are hosting a Craft and Demo Show on September 29, 2007 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Interested in displaying your crafts or demonstratting your product? Here is your chance. If you just want to come and check out what everyone else is showing off, no application is needed; the show will take place at the Fox Chase Branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia.
  • The Friends of the Fox Chase Library will have their annual Book Sale on June 2, 2007 from 9:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. All types of books, videos, neighborhood history books and soft pretzels will be sold. Prices are $.50 for hardbacks and $.25 for paperbacks with children's books and "specials" priced individually.

Haverford

  • Friends of the Haverford Branch will be Rocking the Neighborhood with Native-American music on December 8 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. "Play the first pow-wow drum."

Holmesburg

  • Craft tables, yummy cookies and holiday music unite to create a Winter Wonderland on December 12. Join us at the Holmesburg library for this special holiday event running throughout the day. Storytime at 6:30 p.m.
  • Meet Santa on December 8 from 1:00 to 4:30 p.m. at the Holmesburg Library. Bring your camera, visit with Santa, make decorations and support your library. Santa will be reading stories at 2:00 p.m.
  • Friends Book and Bake Sale: Saturday, November 17 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Holmesburg Branch Library. All genres of Gently Used Soft and Hard Cover Books available.
  • Friends of the Holmesburg Library are meeting to plan for Fun & Free Activiteis for the Library. Wednesday, October 17 at 6:30 p.m. All are welcomed!
  • The Cat's Pajamas: an interactive musical, inspired by the Summer Reading theme, and sure to be loads of zany fun! The Cat's Pajamas entertain with a high-octane performance including signature harmonies, dance, puppets, and madcap theatricality for families who rock, roll, swing and sway. Wednesday, August 8 at 6:30 p.m.
  • Summer Movie Nights: Join us for movies on Monday evenings at 6:00 p.m. throughout the summer. Refreshments courtesy of the Friends of Holmesburg Branch.

  • Ventriloquism with Marian and Friends: Wednesday, July 25, 2007 @ 6:30 p.m. A fun and interactive show performed by a mother and daughter team with a lively cast of zany characters.
  • Craft of the Week for school-age kids: Thursdays at 3:00 p.m. on July 19, 26, August 2 & 9.
  • 100th Anniversary of the Holmesburg Library: Wednesday, June 20th from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Celebrate the 100th anniversary of the branch and enjoy a puppet workshop, the Sounds of Liberty Chorus, and remarks by library and community leaders. Refreshments will be served. Events and activities are FREE.
  • Friends Book Sale: May 19, 2007 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Gently Used Children's Books, Adult Fiction and Non Fiction for sale from $0.10 to $1. Proceeds benefit Holmesburg Library.

Independence

  • The Awfully Terrific TWEEN Party, supported in part by Friends of Independence Branch, will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on October 31. Just before the party, from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m., there will be a showing of a Frightfully Fun Movie.

Kensington

  • Friends Meeting: Monday, December 10 at 4:30 p.m.
  • On November 17 from 2:00 to 4"00 p.m., Friends of Kensington will be Rocking the Neighborhood with Carribean music. "Limbo to the sounds of a steel trash band"
  • Friends Meeting: November 7 at 4:30 p.m.
  • Kensington Friends will host the Community Resource Fair at Kensington Library on October 24, 2007 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Call Marcela Franco or Peter O'Steen for more information at 215-685-9996.
  • Friends of Kensington Meeting will be held at 4:30 on October 3, 2007.
  • The next Friends of Kensington Group Meeting will take place at 4:00 p.m. on August 15th.

Lawncrest

  • The next Friends Meeting will be on Wednesday, December 5 at 12:00 p.m. This Annual Christmas Luncheon is now open to all.
  • Friends Meeting: 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, November 7.
  • Friends Meeting October 3 at 1:15 p.m.
  • Hardback Book Bag Sale: Monday, October 1st from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m.
  • Annual Fall Book & Media Sale: Saturday, September 29 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Friends Meeting: Welcome back from the summer break. Wednesday, September 5th at 1:15 p.m.
  • On June 13th, as part of the Knight Bus's stop, the Lawncrest Branch will be teaching children and adults how to make witch's hats and origami owls, as well as providing face painting, sorting patrons into the four Hogwarts houses, and raffling off 7 Harry Potter-themed gift baskets, donated by the Friends of Lawncrest. Crafts and games in the branch are open for all participants. The events run from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
  • The next meeting of the Friends of Lawncrest Library will be held on Wednesday, June 6th at 1:30 p.m. in the library meeting room. We will complete our 2006-2007 term year with a live, quality show by Don Kelvin presenting "Entertainment For All Occasions."
  • Friends of Lawncrest Library are hosting their 7th Annual Lunch Box Bingo on May 2, 2007 at the Lawncrest Recreation Center. Have fun playing bingo while helping to raise funds for the Lawncrest Library. Doors open at 11:00 a.m. Lunch served at noon. Cost is $10 per person and includes a box lunch, 3 playing cards and a chance to win a table prize.

Lovett

  • On Saturday June 9th, Friends of Lovett will be having their Spring 5B Sale (Books, memorial Bricks, Baked goods & Brick a Brack) at the branch from 11-3 p.m.("ish").
  • Saturday May 5th, the Friends of the Lovett Library will have a table for Mt. Airy Day near the intersection of Cliveden & Germantown.

Oak Lane

  • Friends of Oak Lane and Oak Lane Tree Tenders present The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Chester County on Saturday, May 12th at 7:30 p.m. This will be an evening of funny, catchy songs from musicals where the entanglement of love always ends happily. Tickets: $15 for adults, $6 for children, children under 14 years free with adult. Presented at the Korean United Church at 12th and Cheltenham Ave.

Ogontz

  • Family Fun Day will be held on Saturday, November 17 from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m.; featuring games, refreshments, snacks, door prizes and a book sale.
  • The Friends of David Cohen Ogontz Branch will meet on Monday, October 1, 2007 at 6:00 p.m.
  • The next Friends Meeting will be held on Monday, June 25, 2007 at 6:00 p.m. Come and connect with your library and your community.
  • Friends of Ogontz Library will hold their Community Party and Flea Market on Saturday, May 12th from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. featuring: Spiral Q Puppet Theater, Free Style Dancers, Pointe Flex Dance Studio, Children Just for Now Network, Viveca Tubman Gresham (descendent of Harriet Tubman), live music, used book sale, refreshments. (Vending space is $10, bring your own table)

Overbrook Park

  • Be a Friend to the Overbrook Park Branch: Join other teens on Wednesday evenings during the summer to discuss and carry out projects and programs that will help the branch. Teens can earn community service credit. Refreshments will be served. Wednesdays 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
  • The Cat's Pajamas: Interactive musical performance including signature harmonies, dance, puppets and madcap theatricality. Tuesday, July 24 at 11:00 a.m.

PCI

  • PCI Friends are hosting a Bus Trip to NYC on September 30th. The bus leaves from the library at 8:30 a.m. and will arrive in NYC's Times Square. Departure from the city will be at 6:30 p.m. Cost for the trip is $35.

  • Friday, June 15 @ 3:00 p.m. Friends of PCI invite you to view The Dead and to meet Brendan Kilty, owner of the James Joyce House of The Dead at 15 Usher's Island, Dublin 8 on the south bank of the river Liffey. Hear how he celebrates and recreates the atmosphere of the dinner party of the century as described by James Joyce in The Dead (Dubliners). Over the past 18 months, some 450 Million people around the globe have read about the restoration of No. 15 Usher's Island. Not bad for what was intended to be no more than the fulfillment of one man's dream. Remember Bloomsday is Saturday, June 16

Rodriguez

  • The next Friends Meeting will be held on Monday, November 5 at 6:30 p.m.
  • On October 13 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., Friends of Rodriguez will be Rocking the Neighborhood with Latin American Music. "Shake, rattle and roll with guiros, cajónes and much more!"
  • Story-Time for babies and toddlers will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 p.m. on Thursdays, May 17, 31, June 14 & 28.
  • The Friends Group Meeting will be held on Monday, June 04 at 6:30 p.m. Items on the agenda include welcoming of new members, a recap on the success of the Spring Open-House and discussions of future plans.

Santore

  • Library in the Park, featuring The Knife and Fork Band: Join the Friends of Santore Library for a fun filled evening at Palumbo City Park on Catherine Street between 7th and 8th. Wednesday, October 24, 2007 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. $3 child/$5 adult; pay at the door. Costumed children get in free!
  • A Flea Market will be held at the Charles Santore Library at 7th & Carpenter Sts. on Saturday May 12 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Tables will be $15.00 or two for $25.00 and space will be limited, so hurry, hurry, hurry to sign up. The Friends will also have a book table, a food table and a craft table for the kids. Don't miss this annual event. Please note: Rain date is May 19th.

Tacony

  • The Friends were to host a Holiday Open House starting at 6:30 p.m. on December 5. Refreshments and holiday activities; featuring the Northeast High School Choir. Open House was cancelled due to weather.
  • The next Friends Meeting will be held on Monday, November 19 at 6:30 p.m.
  • Friends of Tacony Library host an Outdoor Flea Market & Craft Show on Saturday, October 6 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Free and Open to the public @ Tacony Free Library Branch
  • Tacony's next Friends Meeting will be held on September 17, 2007 at 6:30 p.m.
  • Community Fair & Friends Drive: Come out to support the library. Attractions include a moonwalk and giant slide, carnival games and an appearance by Swoop, the Philadelphia Eagles mascot. Refreshments available. The fair will take place on Saturday, June 23, 2007 from Noon to 4:00 p.m.

Torresdale

  • Friends Meeting: Monday, December 3 at 6:00 p.m.
  • The next Friends Meeting will be held on Monday, November 5 at 6:00 p.m.
  • On October 27, the Library and the Friends will host an Open House and Halloween Spooktacular from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Activties will include arts and crafts and a Children's Costume Party (for pre-K through 2nd grade) at 2 p.m.
  • Friends Meeting on October 1, 2007 at 6:00 p.m.
  • The next Friends Meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the library meeting room.
  • Summer Chess Club will meet every Friday, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. from July 13 to August 17. Children (8 and up) and adults of all levels are invited.

Walnut Street West

  • Walnut West Library will hold a special book sale inside the library on Saturday, December 8 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., featuring very fine quality books for gift giving, great variety, with special emphasis on art, biography and special editions.
  • Friends of Walnut West holds a book sale every week on Friday in good weather. The sales are outside of the library and run from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.
  • The Friends are sponsoring a Chess Club for school children on Wednesdays from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the library. Adults who can play chess are encouraged to join us to help teach new players. Snacks will be served.

West Oak Lane

  • Friends Meeting: November 28 at 6:00 p.m.
  • Friends Meeting on Saturday, October 20 at 1:30 p.m.

Whitman

  • Friends Meeting on Monday, October 29 at 6:00 p.m.

Wynnefield

  • Friends of Wynnefield Library and the Crochet Club sponsor the Winter Craft Bazaar and Bake Sale Saturday, December 15 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Handmade gifts and baked good to buy.
  • Friends of Wynnefield Library Harvest Celebration scheduled for October 24 was postponed indefinitely. More details to follow.
  • The Friends of Wynnefield will be taking part in the National Night Out event on Tuesday, August 7, 2007. Stop by their table at the Mann School for information and a free gift.
  • Wednesday, May 30: viewing of Night at the Museum
  • Wednesday, May 23 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.: Books on Screen discussion comparing Louis Begley's book About Schmidt and the movie seen the previous day. Funding has been provided by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council.
  • Tuesday, May 22 @ 2:00 p.m.: The Books on Screen Program will be viewing the movie About Schmidt.
  • Concert in the Courtyard, presented by the Wynnefield Friends, will take place on Saturday, May 19, 2007 at 2 p.m with EDQ1.
  • Wednesday, May 16 @ 4:30 p.m.: Friends of Wynnefield are hosting a Bake Sale during the LEAP Spelling Bee.
  • Concert in the Courtyard, presented by the Wynnefield Friends, will take place on Saturday, May 12, 2007 at 2 p.m with the Mt. Carmel Church Band.
