Emerging Writers Series

Book Corner's Emerging Writers Series is an entirely FREE series that supports local emerging writers and artists. Readings, book clubs, writing and arts workshops, and other exciting events are held bi-monthly.

The Business of Words: a poetry writing workshop comes to Book Corner in March of 2008. Tamara Oakman will lead participants through this workshop for serious writers in need of inspiration, techniques, and advice on craft. Ms. Oakman has many awards in poetry, fiction, non-fiction and drama; judged a writing contest for Hidden River Arts; is published in literary journals; and reads poetry and fiction in Philadelphia and the surrounding areas. She has a BA in English and a Writing Certificate from Temple University and is currently working on her MA in English with a concentration in writing at Arcadia University. The Business of Words will meet for the first time on Saturday, March 1, 2008 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Book Corner and continue to meet on the first and third Saturdays of each month (March 15, April 5 & 19, etc.). This workshop is free and open to the public, but space is limited to 15 people so call 215.567.0527 to reserve your spot and remember to bring 10 to 15 copies of your poem to the meeting.

Previous events in the Emerging Writers Series have included The Kristine Grow Poetry Workshop, the Light of Unity Festival, and the James Joyce Book Club which was hosted by our knowledgeable staff.

In Philadelphia Memory and Change, a series funded by the PA State 5 Arts Council, participants engaged in four visual arts workshops and explored the evolution of Philadelphia. Through journal writing, photography, book making, and sculpture, emerging artist delved into memories of the past, reflected on the present, and explored the future of our urban environment.
